    The following historical information is about the service of both the regiment, and the men, of the Third (3rd) South Carolina Volunteer Light Artillery Battalion, also known as the "Palmetto Light Artilley Battalion," which served in the American Civil War from August 1861 to May 1865. (*) Due to the spread out nature of the companies, they were often in multiple districts and departments at the same time. The following is a generalized breakdown of the battalion assignments, a more detailed account will be found with the company histories.

August to November 1861 - Department of South Carolina

November 1861 to June 1862 - James Island, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

June to July 1862 - 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

July to August 1862 - James Island, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

September 1862 to July 1863 - 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

October 1863 to July 1864 - 7th Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

July to December 1864 - Taliaferro's Brigade, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

December 1864 to January 1865 - Reserve Artillery, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

January to April 1865 - Wright's Division, Hardee's Corps, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida

 
  BATTALION TIMELINE

 
August 9th, 1861: The Battalion is organized as the Palmetto (White's) Battalion of Light Artillery, with three (3) companies.

October 13th, 1861: Company A is assigned to White's Battalion of Light Artillery by order of Brigadier General Roswell S. Ripley, PACS.

October 26th, 1861: Company B is mustered into Confederate service at Summerville, South Carolina, for the duration of the war, by Mustering Officer, Rawlins Lowndes. Company C is mustered into Confederate service at Secessionville, South Carolina, for the duration of the war, by Mustering Officer, Rawlins Lowndes.

November 14th, 1861: Company D is mustered into Confederate service at Charleston, South Carolina, for the duration of the war, by Mustering Officer, Captain, John Waties.

August 1861 to February 1865: Served in the Operations in and around Charleston, South Carolina.

January 30th, 1863: Company F is engaged in the capture of the USS Isaac Smith in the Stono River.

August 12th to 18th, 1863: Company A is engaged in the actions at Fort Wagner on Morris Island.

August 31st to September 7th, 1863: Company E is engaged in the actions at Fort Wagner on Morris Island.

    December 25th, 1863: Company F is engaged in action against the USS Marblehead near Legareville.

    May 26th, 1864: Company A is engaged in action against the USS Boston in the Ashepoo River.

    July 3rd, 1864: Companies E & G are engaged in actions at King Creek near Adams Run, South Carolina.

March 20th, 1862: Company E is organized and mustered into Confederate service for the duration of the war.

April 15th, 1862: Company F is organized with men transferred from Company D, and is mustered into Confederate service at Camp Heyward on James Island, South Carolina, for the duration of the war, by Mustering Officer, Major, Edward B. White.

May 24th, 1862: Company G is mustered into Confederate service at Camp Yeadon on Wappo Creek, South Carolina, for the duration of the war, by Mustering Officer, Major, Edward B. White, to date from May 1st, 1862.

May 28th, 1862: Company H is organized with men transferred from Company A, and is mustered into Confederate service for the duration of the war.

December 1862 to February 1863: Companies B & C are detached and served in the operations in, and around, Wilmington, North Carolina.

May 24th, 1863: Companies B & C are detached from the Battalion for the remainder of their service, being sent to serve in the Western Theater.

June 8th, 1863: Company I is organized with men transferred from Company H, and mustered into Confederate service for the duration of the war.

June 21st, 1863: Company K is organized with men transferred from Company G, and mustered into Confederate service for the duration of the war.

April 1st, 1864: Companies H, I & K are ordered to be disbanded, their formation being irregularly approved and therefore illegal.

January to April 1865: Served in the Carolina's Campaign.

    February 3rd, 1865: Company A is Engaged at River's Bridge, South Carolina.

    March 15th & 16th, 1865: Engaged at Averysboro, North Carolina.

    March 19th to 21st, 1865: Engaged at Bentonville, North Carolina.

    April 26th, 1865: Surrendered with the Army at Durham Station, North Carolina.

May 1st, 1865: Paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina.
