The following historical information is about the service of both the battery, and the men, of the Brooks Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers, (also known as Rhett's Battery and Fickling's Battery) which served in the American Civil War from Janaury 1862 to April 1865. BATTERY TIMELINE
May 8th, 1861: The Company is organized and enrolled as the "Brooks Guard Volunteers" at Charleston, South Carolina, by Captain Andrew B. Rhett, for the period of twelve months' service.
May 12th, 1861: The company moves from Charleston to Richmond, Virginia.
May 23rd, 1861: The company is mustered into Confederate service as Company K of the 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Camp Davis near Richmond, Virginia.
January 1862: Captain Rhett receives permission from the War Department to enlist and organize a Company of Light Artillery, and sixty-one (61) men from the company re-enlist in this organization.
January 28th, 1862: The battery is mustered into service as the Brook's Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers, at Camp Camden near Manassas, Virginia, for the period of two years and three months' service, under the command of Captain A. Burnet Rhett.
February to March 1862: In camp near Charleston, South Carolina, where it was recruited and completed its organization and equipment.
March to May 1862: In camp at Camp Lee near Richmond, Virginia, going through training at the Artillery Camp of Instruction.
June to July 1862: Served in the Seven Days Campaign.
June 26th, 1862: Engaged at Mechanicsville, Virginia.
June 27th, 1862: Engaged at Beaver Dam Creek, Virginia.
June 30th, 1862: Engaged at White Oak Swamp, Virginia.
July to August 1862: Served in the Manassas Campaign.
August 23rd, 1862: Engaged at Rappahannock Station, Virginia.
August 30th, 1862: Engaged at Manassas, Virginia.
September to October 1862: Served in the Maryland Campaign, at this time the battery was armed with two 6-pnd. Smoothbore guns, one 12-pndr. Napoleon and one 12-pndr. howitzer.
September 17th, 1862: Engaged at Sharpsburg, Maryland.
November to December 1862: Served in the Rappahannock Campaign.
December 13th, 1862: Engaged at Fredericksburg, Virginia.
April to May 1863: Served in the Chancellorsville Campaign.
May 1st to 4th, 1863: Engaged at Chancellorsville, Virginia.
June to July 1863: Served in the Pennsylvania Campaign; at this time the battery was armed with four 12-pndr. howitzers.
July 2nd to 3rd, 1863: Engaged at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in which action the battery lost thirty-eight men killed and wounded.
September to November 1863: Served in the Siege of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
November to December 1863: Served in the Siege of Knoxville, Tennessee.
December 21st, 1863: The battery re-enlisted for the duration of the war at Bean Station, Tennessee.
April to June 1864: Served in the Overland Campaign.
May 5th & 6th, 1864: Engaged at the Wilderness, Virginia.
May 8th to 21st, 1864: Engaged at Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia.
May 23rd to 26th, 1864: Engaged along the North Anna River, Virginia.
June 1st to 3rd, 1864: Engaged at Cold Harbor, Virginia.
June 1864 to April 1865: Served in the Defense of Richmond & Petersburg.
April 2nd to 10th, 1865: Served in the Appomattox Campaign.
April 6th, 1865: Engaged at Sailor's Creek, Virginia.
