Rogers, Robert M.: Of Darlington District, South Carolina. Enlisted and was mustered into State service as Fourth Sergeant of Company B (Darlington Guards) of the 1st (Gregg's) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment on January 3rd, 1861, at Charleston, South Carolina, for six months' service; mustered out of service with the company on July 8th, 1861, at Camp Gregg near Richmond, Virginia. Enrolled on July 29th, 1861, at Darlington Courthouse, South Carolina, for twelve months' service; mustered into service as Third Lieutenant of Company D of the 1st (Gregg's) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment in August 1861, at Richmond, Virginia; tendered his resignation on February 17th, 1862, the application was endorsed by Colonel D.H. Hamilton with the note that "…earnestly recommended, as Lieut. Was placed under arrest for being intoxicated, the acceptance of his resignation is demanded for the discipline of my regt.;" his resignation was accepted and he was honorably discharged from the service on February 24th, 1862. Re-enlisted and was mustered into service as a Private in the Pee Dee Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers, on June 18th, 1862, at Mechanicsville, Virginia, for the duration of the war; absent, sick in hospital, in June 1862; absent, on recruiting service in June 1864; absent, without leave, from December 30th, 1864; no further record after December 1864. R.M. Rogers to John McQueen - "...Influenced by the intimate friendship & relations which I have reason to believe to exist between my father & yourself, I venture to solicit your aid in getting me an appointment of some kind in the army. I have some very strong reasons for asking your aid in this. Captain McIntosh who has hitherto commanded this battery has been promoted and he will therefore leave us very soon. Lieut. Brunson being the Senior Lieutenant of the company will rise by promotion to the Captaincy. There has never been any very friendly feeling existing between this officer & myself. I have every reason therefore to expect that to remain under his command will be very disagreeable & unpleasant to me. I therefore bein very much dissatisfied with my commanding officer, venture to ask your aid in getting me an appointment."
