The following historical information is about the service of both the battery, and the men, of the Santee Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers, (also known as Gaillard's Battery) which served in the American Civil War from October 1861 to May 1865. BATTERY TIMELINE
October 15th, 1861: The company is organized and mustered into Confederate States service as the Santee Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers, at St. James Parish, South Carolina, for the duration of the war.
December 22nd, 1861: The battery is assigned as Company B of Manigault's Battalion of South Carolina Volunteers.
May 18th, 1862: Manigault's Battalion is disbanded, and the company briefly becomes an Independent Battery of Light Artillery.
May 25th to June 1st, 1862: The battery is attached to the 6th (Byrd's) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion.
June 1st, 1862: The company is reorganized as an Independent Company of Artillery, designated as the Santee Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers.
October 1861 to May 1863: The battery is stationed at Camp Palmer on Sewee Bay and at Battery Warren on the Santee River, South Carolina; with a section under Lieutenant Cain, 3-guns and 51-men, at Battery Warren.
April 17th, 1862: A detachment of 2-officers & 34 enlisted is sent to Andersonville, Christ Church Parish, to reinforce Whilden's Command, returning on April 19th.
June 26th, 1862: One section is engaged in the action against Federal gunboats at Blake's Plantations along the South Santee River.
June 27th, 1862: One section is engaged in the action against Federal gunboats at El Dorado Plantation along the South Santee River.
November 1862: The section, under Lieutenant Venning, at Camp Palmer is moved to Andresonville in Christ Church Parish, South Carolina; the section under Lieutenant DuPre is moved to Battery Warren, joining Cain's Section.
March 1863: The battery has assigned to it two Napoleon guns which were captured (along with two other pieces) by the 10th & 19th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment's at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on December 31st, 1862.
May 18th, 1863: The battery moves from Battery Warren to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
May 19th, 1863: The battery arrives at Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, having marched 45-miles, where it was joined by Lieutenant Venning's section from Andersonville.
June 3rd, 1863: The battery moves to, and is encamped at, Gadsden Green in Charleston, South Carolina.
June 23rd, 1863: The battery moves from Charleston to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
June 23rd to 26th, 1863: The battery is on duty at Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
June 27th, 1863: The battery moves to Battery Warren on the Santee River, South Carolina.
June 1863 to February 1864: The battery is stationed at Battery Warren on the Santee River, South Carolina.
July 7th, 1863: One section, under Lieutenant Venning, is ordered to Collin's Bridge near the South Santee Battery on Blake's Plantation, McClellanville.
October 30th, 1863: One section of Napoleon guns is sent to Charleston, South Carolina, where they are exchanged for a section of rifled guns.
March 7th, 1864: One gun is moved from Battery Warren to McClellanville.
March 1864 to November 1864: In camp, and on duty, at McClellanville, South Carolina; during this period the battery is armed with two 6-pnd. smoothbore and two 3-in. rifle guns.
March 25th, 1864: One section of the battery is engaged in an action near McClellanville, South Carolina.
March 30th, 1864: One section moves from Mount Pleasant to McClellanville.
April 2nd, 1864: Assistant Inspector of Artillery (Major) G.U. Mayo reports to Colonel A.J. Gonzales, Chief of Artillery of the Department - "...Santee Light Artillery, Capt. C. Gaillard: Only one section is in the First Military District. The guns of this section require sights. Its implements are in good order, as well as the ammunition, but the harness needs repairing, for which there is no leather. Some parts of the iron-work require refixing, as was indicated by the breaking of the pole yoke, coming apart from the carriage upon the drill. The forge and battery wagons are in good order. The horses are not very good, being only average. The military appearance and drill of the men are good, and I am informed by the lieutenant commanding the section that such officers as are attached to it are of a sober habits. The camp is in fair order."
November 25th, 1864: The battery moves from McClellanville to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, arriving on November 26th, marching 36-miles.
November to December 1864: In camp, and on duty, at Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
December 5th, 1864: One section is ordered to Andersonville, Christ Church Parish, South Carolina, arriving that same day, having marched 19-miles.
December 26th, 1864: The battery moves 8 miles from Mount Pleasant, leaving one gun and a detachment at Porcher's Plantation near Mount Pleasant.
December 1864 to February 1865: The battery is stationed on John's Island near Charleston, South Carolina; during this time the battery is armed with two 6-pndr. bronze and two 3-in. rifle guns.
February to April 1865: Served in the Carolina's Campaign.
April 26th, 1865: Surrendered with the Army of Tennessee at Durham Station, North Carolina
April 30th, 1865: The battery is paroled and disbanded at Greensboro, North Carolina.

Enrolled and was mustered into service as Senior First Lieutenant of the battery on October 30th, 1861, at St. James Parish, South Carolina, for the duration of the war; tendered his resignation on May 9th, 1863, due to having "…been elected Tax Collector for the Parishes of St. James, Santee and St. Stephens," which was accepted, and he was honorably discharged from the service on May 28th, 1863.
