BATTERY TIMELINE
May to June 1861: The "Washington Artillery," South Carolina Volunteers, is organized in Charleston, South Carolina, with recruits coming from throughout South Carolina, as part of the Artillery Battalion of Hampton's Legion of South Carolina Volunteers.
June 11th, 1861: The battery moves from Charleston to Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina.
June 15th, 1861: The battery is mustered into Confederate States service at Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina, for the period of twelve months' service.
July 30th, 1861: The battery joins the Hampton Legion at Rockett's Landing near Richmond, Virginia.
April 25th, 1862: The battery is re-enlisted and reorganized for three years' service near Richmond, Virginia.
June to July 1862: Served in the Seven Days Campaign (Virginia).
August 18th, 1862: Engaged in the action at Malvern Hill, Virginia.
August 1862: The battery is converted from a field artillery to horse artillery battery near Richmond, Virginia.
September 2nd, 1862: The battery rejoins the Army of Northern Virginia and is assigned to the Cavalry Corps.
September to October 1862: Served in the Maryland Campaign.
September 12th, 1862: Engaged at Monocacy and Frederick, Maryland.
September 14th, 1862: Engaged in the action at Cotoctin Mountain, Maryland.
September 17th, 1862: Engaged at Sharpsburg, Maryland.
October 9th to 12th, 1862: One section served in Stuart's Expedition into Maryland and Pennsylvania.
November to December 1862: Served in the Fredericksburg Campaign (Virginia).

June 21st, 1863: Engaged at Upperville, Virginia; in his action the battery lost one Blakley gun, when the limber was stuck and exploded, dismounting the gun.

July 3rd, 1863: Engaged at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
July 5th, 1863: Engaged at Williamsport, Maryland.

Appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, from the State of South Carolina; entered the Military Academy as a Cadet on July 1st, 1850; graduated 17th in his class, of 46, from the Military Academy on July 1st, 1854, and was appointed as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery with the 4th United States Artillery Regiment. Served on frontier duty at the Ringgold Barracks, Texas, from 1854 to 1856; promoted to First Lieutenant of Artillery on October 31st, 1856; served in the Florida Hostilities against the Seminole Indians from 1856 to 1857, during which time he was the acting Assistant Adjutant-General of the Department of Florida from August 22nd to September 18th, 1857;. as the Regimental Quartermaster of the 4th Artillery Regiment from September 18th, 1857, to February 8th, 1861; on frontier duty at Ft.
