    The following historical information is about the service of both the regiment, and the men, of the First (1st) South Carolina Volunteer Artillery Regiment, which served in the American Civil War from March 1862 to May 1865.   REGIMENTAL TIMELINE

 
March 25th, 1862: The regiment is organized by the increase of the First (1st) Artillery Battalion, South Carolina Volunteers, to a full regiment, and is designated as the First (1st) Artillery Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers.

April 12th, 1862: Company K is organized per Special Order No. 231, Headquarters, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida.

March 1862 to February 1865: Served in the Operations in and around Charleston, South Carolina.

    January 30th, 1863: An expedition under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Yates, including Company I, is engaged in the capture of the gunboat USS Isaac T. Smith in the Stono River.

    April 7th, 1863: Eight (8) companies are engaged in the Federal Ironclad attack upon Charleston Harbor.

    July to September 1863: Engaged in the Operations on Morris Island.

          July 10th, 1863: Company I is engaged in the action on the south end of Morris Island, losing 31-men missing.

          July 11th, 1863: Company I is engaged in the attack on Fort Wagner.

          July 25th, 1863: Company C is engaged in the action at Battery Gregg, suffering the loss of 1 man killed.

    August 7th & 8th, 1863: Engaged in the Ironclad attack on Charleston Harbor.

    August 17th to 21st, 1863: Engaged in the bombardment of Fort Sumter.

    July 4th to 9th, 1864: Company B is engaged in an action with Federal Gunboats at Battery Pringle.

    July 3rd, 1864: Companies E & K are engaged in the defense of Fort Johnson, during an attack on that place.

    July 16th, 1864: A section of Company A is engaged in the action at River's Causeway, James Island.

December 10th to 19th, 1864: Company E serves in the defense of Savannah, Georgia, manning a battery on the Louisville Road.

February to April 1865: Served in the Carolina's Campaign.

    March 15th & 16th, 1865: Engaged at Averysboro, North Carolina.

    March 19th to 21st, 1865: Engaged at Bentonville, North Carolina.

April 26th, 1865: Surrendered with the Army at Durham Station, North Carolina.

May 1st, 1865: The regiment lays down its arms and is paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina.
