June 10th, 1863: The Company is organized by the transferring of men from the various companies of the Twentieth (20th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment and is designated as "Keitt's Company of Mounted Riflemen." Upon its organization the company is assigned as Company M of the 20th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, under the command of Captain Ellison S. Keitt.
April 30th, 1864: The company is detached from the 20th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment and designated as Keitt's Company of Mounted Riflemen, South Carolina Volunteers.
June 1863 to February 1865: Served in the defense of the South Carolina coastline.
June 1863 to April 12th, 1864: The Company is stationed at McClellanville, South Carolina.
April 12th, 1864: The company is ordered to move from McClellanville to Battery White on West Winyah Bay near Georgetown, South Carolina
May 23rd, 1864: The Company is ordered to move from Battery White to Andersonville, South Carolina, a distance of nineteen (19) miles.
At this time Captain Keitt reports that the company has 92 men of which 69 are present and 23 are on detached duty at the Palmetto Battery.
August 7th to 29th, 1864: The company moves from Andersonville to Sullivans Island, where it serves on picket duty, before returning to Andersonville.
September 19th, 1864: The company moves from Andersonville to Mount Pleasant, being assigned to duty guarding the 25-miles of defenses from Mount Pleasant to Oardain Creek.
December 20th, 1864: The company is assigned to the Nineteenth (19th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, and designated as Company B, per Paragraph 2, Special Order No. 301, Adjutant & Inspector General's Office, Richmond, Virginia.

Enlisted and was mustered into service as a Private in Company L of the 20th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment on February 1st, 1863, at Marlboro, South Carolina, for the duration of the war; the company is designated as Spark's Company of South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry ("Ripley Rangers") on April 30th, 1863; honorably discharged on June 10th, 1863, to accept an appointment. Elected and was mustered into service as Second Lieutenant of Company M of the 20th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 10th, 1863, for the duration of the war; absent without leave from November 15th to December 26th, 1863; the company is designated as Keitt's Company of Mounted Riflemen on April 30th, 1864; absent, on detached service, in May 1864; present, sick in quarters, in October 1864; the company is designated as Company B of the 19th South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion on December 20th, 1864; absent, on a sick furlough, from December 23rd, 1864; no further record after December 1864. [Born on August 24th, 1840, in Marlboro District, South Carolina, the son of Zachariah Alford (1813-1886) & Sophia Alford Drake (1813-1864); married Miss Jincy Caroline Donaldson (1845-1908), no date; died on August 30th, 1876, in Marlboro County, South Carolina; buried at the Drake-Dudley Cemetery near Blenheim, Marlboro County, South Carolina.]
