The following is a biographical roster of the officers and enlisted men of DeSaussure's Squadron of South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry. If you have any corrections, suggestions, or additional information, photographs, etc., that you would like to contribute, submit them to the Webmaster.
The Squadron Field & Staff was organized on February 2nd, 1861, with the appointment of Major William D. DeSaussure to command the unit.

Shannon, Samuel Davis: Of Kershaw District, South Carolina. Appointed as Second Lieutenant of Company B of DeSaussure's Squadron of South Carolina Cavalry on February 2nd, 1861, for twelve months' service; detailed as Squadron Recruiting Officer in April 1861; as the acting Battalion Adjutant from May 1st to June 5th, 1861; honorably discharged on June 6th, 1861, to acecpt an appointment. Appointed as Captain of Company B of Lucas' Battalion of South Carolina Infantry on June 6th, 1861, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, for three years' service; resigned his commission on October 10th, 1861. Appointed as an Aide-de-Camp, with the rank of First Lieutenant, in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States on January 3rd, 1863, accepting the appointment on January 10th, 1863, to rank from December 4th, 1862; appointment is confirmed on April 23rd, 1863; served on the staff of General Richard Heron Anderson, PACS, from December 1862; on October 21st, 1864, General Anderson requested the arrest and return to duty of Shannon, which was granted on October 27th; no further record after November 1864. This company was originally organized in January 1861 under Captain Jon B. Villepigue as the Second (2nd) Company of DeSaussure's Squadron of South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry, however, in February it was designated as Company B, and finally changed again to Company A.

Mustered into service as a Private in Company B of Lucas' Battalion of South Carolina Infantry on June 6th, 1861, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, for three years' service; battalion is redesignated as the 15th South Carolina Volunteer Heavy Artillery Battalion in August 1861; slightly wounded in action (face) on July 24th, 1863, at Fort Pemberton on James Island, South Carolina; re-enlisted for the duration of the war on February 18th, 1864; absent, on a re-enlistment furlough, from February 26th, 1864; court-martialed in May 1864, and was found guilty and sentenced to one-months confinement and loss of pay; on detached service at the District Headquarters from October 18th, 1864; captured in action on March 7th, 1865, in Rockingham County, North Carolina; taken as a prisoner of war to New Bern, North Carolina, arriving in March 1865; transferred to the prisoner of war camp at Point Lookout, Maryland, arriving on March 30th, 1865; released upon taking the Oath of Allegiance on May 15th, 1865, at Point Lookout, Maryland.
