January to May 1862 - Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
December 22nd, 1861: The battalion is officially organized at Camp Palmer near McClellanville, South Carolina, as Manigault's Battalion of South Carolina Volunteers, for the purpose of providing local defense along the South Carolina coastline from Georgetown to Charleston. Originally composed of three (3) companies, one of infantry, cavalry and artillery, it would later have added to it four additional companies three (3) of infantry and one (1) of cavalry.
November 18th, 1861: The Trenholm Rifles are mustered into service at Mount Pleasant and are designated as Company C.
December 4th, 1861: The Chesnut Guards are mustered into service at Mount Pleasant and are designated as Company D (1).
January 13th, 1862: The Kickapoo Riflemen are mustered into service at Mount Pleasant and are designated as Company E.
March 22nd, 1862: The Rowell Guards are mustered into service at Marion and are designated as Company D (2).
December 22nd, 1861: The St. James Mounted Riflemen, Company A, is attached to the battalion, and designated as Company A.
May 1st, 1862: Company A is divided into two companies, and the St. James Mounted Riflemen, Company B, are mustered into service, and assigned as an undesignated company of the battalion.
May 18th, 1862: The Battalion is disbanded, with the two (2) companies of cavalry and company of artillery becoming independent companies, the Trenholm Rifles were disbanded, and the Kickapoo Riflemen, Rowell Guards and Chesnut Guards were reorganized into the Sixth (6th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion at Camp Palmer near McClellanville, South Carolina.
