The 'Calhoun Light Artillery' was organized in early 1861 by Captain William M. Murray with volunteers from Edisto, Fenwick's & Musselboro Islands in Colleton District, South Carolina. Assigned as Company B of Heyward's Regiment in early May, the men were detailed to duty constructing earthworks and fortifications along the South Edisto River's until April 26th, when they moved to the North Edisto River. From April 26th to June 19th, 1861, the company was encamped as the garrison of the works protecting the North Edisto River from any possible Federal advance. When the regiment was accepted for Confederate service the company declined to volunteer, and was officially disbanded in mid-June 1861, with the members returning home or re-enlisting in other organizations.

The 'St. Paul's Rifles' were organized in November 1860 in Colleton District, South Carolina, the men electing Benjamin Burgh Smith as their Captain, and upon the secession of South Carolina offered their services to the Governor for active duty. The offer's acceptance was delayed, and it was not until May 1861 that the company officially began organizing for active service, being officially mustered into service as Company B of the Eleventh (11th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 18th, 1861, at their camp along the North Edisto River, South Carolina, for twelve months' service. The company replaced the original Company B (Calhoun Light Artillery) which had declined to enter Confederate service and was disbanded.
The company served with the regiment and was in camp near Hardeeville when Captain Smith was promoted to Major in September 1861 and Lieutenant William C. Meggett was promoted to fill the vacancy. On March 14th, 1862, the company re-enlisted at Camp Allen, South Carolina, for three years' service, and on May 3rd, 1862, elected new officers, Captain Meggett lost re-election and was replaced by 2nd Lieutenant Richard J. LaRoche, who resigned less than a week later, and Julius J. Wescoat was elected to fill his place and would led the company for the remainder of the war. With the losses sustained during their service the company was temporarily consolidated with the rest of the regiment on March 10th, 1865, as part of Rion's Consolidated Regiment, and the remnants surrendered with that regiment on April 26th, 1865, at Durham Station, North Carolina.

The 'Bamberg Guards' were organized in Bamberg, Barnwell District (now Bamberg County), South Carolina, by Captain W.B. Rice. Accepted into service they were initially assigned as Company F of the Eleventh (11th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, however, on June 26th, 1861, due to the refusal of the 'Republican Blues' (Company I) of the 1st (Hagood's) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment to enter Confederate service, the companies were transferred between the two regiments.
Joining the 1st Infantry Regiment near Charleston the company was officially mustered into State service as Company K (2) of the regiment on August 22nd, 1861, at Summerville, South Carolina, to date from April 12th, 1861, for the period of twelve months' service. In November 1861 the company members chose not to enter Confederate service and the Bamberg Guards were officially disbanded on November 26th, 1861, with the members returning home or enlisting in other commands.

The 'Republican Blues' were organized with volunteers from Barnwell District, South Carolina, by Captain James White. The company was assigned to the First (1st) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, under Colonel Johnson Hagood, and was mustered into State service as Company I of the regiment on April 12th, 1861, for twelve months service. In May 1861 when the discussion of the regiment entering Confederate service was brought forward, the company unanimously refused, preferring to remain in the State service, and on June 26th, 1861, an exchange between regiments was affected with the 'Bamberg Guards' of the Eleventh (11th) Infantry Regiment being transferred to the First (1st) Regiment and the 'Republican Blues' joining the Eleventh (11th) Regiment.
Joining the regiment at their camp near Hardeeville, the company was designated as Company F and entered into active service with the unit. As the issue of Confederate service was brought forward, the company again voted to decline entering Confederate service, and on November 26th, 1861, the 'Republican Blues' were officially disbanded, with the members returning home or re-enlisting in other commands, several of them joining Company I (2) of the regiment.

The 'Yemassee Volunteers' were organized with men from Beaufort District, South Carolina, under Captain W.W. Elliott. Joining the regiment as an unassigned company the men were officially mustered into service as Company F of the Eleventh (11th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 5th, 1861, at Braddock's Point, South Carolina, for twelve months' service. With the disbanding of the 'Republican Blues' in November 1861 the company was designated as Company F of the regiment, taking the place of that company.
Serving with the regiment along the coast, the men re-enlisted for three years' service on March 14th, 1862, near Hardeeville, and on May 3rd, 1862, elected new company officers, with Benjmain F. Wyman being selected by the men as Captain of the company. Serving with the regiment throughout its campaigns, battles and marches, the company found itself greatly reduced by early 1865. Due to these losses the company was temporarily consolidated with the rest of the regiment on March 10th, 1865, as part of Rion's Consolidated Regiment, and the remnants surrendered with that regiment on April 26th, 1865, at Durham Station, North Carolina.

Assigned to Colonel Heyward's Regiment, the joined them near Beaufort, South Carolina, and on June 17th, 1861, were officially mustered into State service as Company I of the Eleventh (11th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment in camp along the South Edisto River, South Carolina, for twelve months' service.
Remaining in camp along the South Edisto, the company suffered a mutiny on August 25th, 1861, in consequence of the men not having been paid for their services. With considerable difficulty the control over the company was restored, and the ring leaders were arrested and imprisoned, and by the end of the month the company was once more reported as being in good condition. Following this incident Captain Edwards resigned, and his place was taken by First Lieutenant J.S. Anderson. When the question of entering Confederate service was put before the company in November 1861, the men were against it, and on November 25th, 1861, the company was officially disbanded, with the men returning home or joining other units.

With the disbanding of several of the companies in November 1861, after declining to enter Confederate service, Colonel Heyward organized a new company in January 1862 out of the men from those companies who wished to re-enlist and new recruits, the men coming from Charleston, Colleton & Beaufort District's. On January 4th, 1862, enough men were assembled for the men to elect their officers, with Allen C. Izard of Bellinger's Company being chosen as Captain. On February 25th, 1862, the company was officially mustered into the State service as Company I of the Eleventh (11th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment at their camp near Hardeeville, South Carolina, for three years' service.
In October 1862 Captain Izard was promoted to Major of the regiment, and First Lieutenant William L. Campbell was promoted to Captain and served until his capture on May 9th, 1864, after which the company was led by the Lieutenant's and occasionally Sergeant's of the company. With the losses sustained during their service the company was temporarily consolidated with the rest of the regiment on March 10th, 1865, as part of Rion's Consolidated Regiment, and the remnants surrendered with that regiment on April 26th, 1865, at Durham Station, North Carolina.

The Colleton Guard (sometimes called the Colleton Rifles) were organized with men from St. Bartholomew's Parish in Colleton District, South Carolina, by E.S.P. Bellinger, who the men elected as their Captain. The company was officially mustered into service as Bellinger's Company of the Eleventh (11th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 28th, 1861, at Tar Bluff, South Carolina, for twelve months' service.
When the question of entering Confederate service was raised in November 1861, the balance of the company did not wish to do so, with both the Second and Third Lieutenant's resigning to re-enlist with other companies, and the Captain and First Lieutenant remaining with the men, until the company was officially disbanded shortly after January 1st, 1862.

The 'Round O' Guards' were organized for State service in late 1861, by Captain Hugo G. Sheridan with volunteers from the area near Round O' in Colleton District, South Carolina. The company was assigned to Colonel Heyward's Regiment and officially mustered into State service on October 15th, 1861, as Sheridan's Company of the Eleventh (11th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment for twelve months' service.
When the question of entering Confederate service was raised in November 1861, the men of the company did not wish to do so, but instead to remain in the State service. As a result of this desire the company was officially disbanded shortly after January 1st, 1862, and reorganized by Lieutenant J.R.P. Fox, whom the men elected as Captain, for State service.
Completing their reorganization the company, now known as the 'Round O' Troop" was assigned as an unassigned company to the First (1st) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, serving as such until June 25th, 1862, when they became Company I of the First (1st) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Serving with the regiment as part of the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until 1865, the returned to South Carolina and ended the war as part of Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida, being surrendered by General Joseph E. Johnston on April 26th, 1865, at Durham Station, North Carolina. The company was disbanded around May 1st, 1862, near Greensboro, North Carolina.
