April 1865 to October 1866 - Department of the South
April 23rd to 29th, 1865: The regiment is organized and mustered into United States service as the 128th Infantry Regiment, United States Colored Troops, at Hilton Head, South Carolina, for three years' service, under the command of Colonel Charles H. Howard.
May 1865 to February 1866: The regiment is on duty at Camp Stanton in Beaufort, South Carolina, where is receives instruction in the School of the Soldier, of the Company, and of the Battalion.
July 1865 to January 1866: Companies E & K are detailed to fatigue duty at Parry's Island, South Carolina, (now known as Parris Island)
July to November 1865: Company H is detailed to duty at Grahamsville, South Carolina; and Company I is detailed to duty at Gillisonville, South Carolina.
October to November 1865: Company F is detailed to temporary duty at Seabrook Landing, South Carolina.
October to December 1865: Company A is detailed to duty at Grahamville, South Carolina.
November of 1865 to January 1866: Company G is on duty at Pocotaligo, South Carolina.
January to February 1866: Company A at Parry's Island; Companies E, F, & I at Hilton Head, and Companies B, D, H, & K at Beaufort, South Carolina.
January to March 1866: Company C is on duty at Grahamsville, South Carolina.
February to October 1866: The regiment is on duty at various posts in and around the city of Charleston, South Carolina, with the Regimental Headquarters being established at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island.
February 27th, 1866: The regiment boards transports at Beaufort, South Carolina, and sails for Charleston Harbor.
February 28th, 1866: The regiment arrives in Charleston Harbor, with Company E being assigned to garrison Fort Sumter.
March 2nd, 1866: The Regimental Headquarters with Companies A, B, D, H, I & K relieve two companies of the 35th United States Colored Troops and occupy the post of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island.
February to September 1866: Company G is on duty at Fort Delafield on Folly Island.
February to October 1866: Company E on garrison duty at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, Company F on garrison duty at Fort Strong on Morris Island.
March to October 1866: Companies D & H are detailed to guard duty at the Charleston City Jail in downtown Charleston.
April to October 1866: Company K is assigned to garrison and guard duty at Castle Pinckney in Charleston Harbor.
May to June 1866: Company A is on duty at Rockville, South Carolina.
July to October 1866: Company A is on duty at Castle Pinckney, South Carolina, and Company I is detailed to duty at the Charleston City Jail.
August to October 1866: Company C on duty in Charleston, South Carolina.
September to October 1866: Company G is on duty with Company F at Fort Strong on Morris Island.
October 10th, 1866: The Regiment is mustered out of United States service at Charleston, South Carolina.
