History of Company A of the "Junaluska Zouaves"

The "Junaluska Zouaves" were organized by William Holland Thomas in April & May 1861 with around two-hundred (200) volunteers from the eastern band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina, most of the men coming from the area around Qualla Town. The unit was named in honor of Chief Junaluska (1775-1858) (pronounced Juna-lus-kee), the leader of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation who had fought with the American Troops in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, where he was reported to have saved the life of General (later President) Andrew Jackson.

In May 1861 the 'State Journal' of Raleigh, North Carolina, reported on the organization of the company that: "...It appears that Col. Thomas, who is the business agent of the Cherokees, lately called a council of the Indians, and explained to them the condition of the country. The chiefs discussed the matter, and said, after consultation, that altho' they did not understand the national difficulty, they did know North Carolina, and would stand by her. They were ready for any position in her defense. This is remarkable. Out of a nation of some 1,500, the muster [of] 200 warriors for the defense of North Carolina. They know nothing of military tactics, but just show them their work, and then they have only to be told when to cease fighting. They fight in their own way, and every man for himself. The Zouaves are ready at a moment's notice."

Originally organized for State service, in April 1862 the company was accepted into Confederate Service. Prior to being mustered, the company was divided with sixty (60) surplus members being organized into Company B, while the remaining ninety-sixty (96) were officially mustered into Confederate Service at Qualla Town as Company A of the North Carolina Cherokee Battalion on April 9th, 1862, for three years' service, under Captain William H. Thomas. In July, Thomas was elected as Major of the Battalion, and replaced as the company commander by 1st Lieutenant James W. Terrell.

Moving to the area around Knoxville, Tennessee, additional recruiting was carried on both in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, and on September 27th, 1862, the command was reorganized as Thomas' Legion of North Carolina Volunteers, and the company re-designated as Company C of the Infantry Regiment. In this reorganization Captain Terrell was appointed as the Legion Quartermaster and Matthew H. Love was promoted to Captain to fill the vacancy, remaining in command throughout the war. However, with more volunteers coming forward, another re-organization was affected in January 1863, and the company was re-designated as Company A of the Infantry Regiment, Thomas' Legion, remaining as such until January 1865 when it, along with Companies B, C & D, were assigned to the Indian Battalion of the Infantry Regiment.

The company would serve with the Legion throughout its campaigns and marches, and would see the end of their service on May 10th, 1865, at Waynesville, North Carolina, where the Legion was formally surrendered and disbanded.

Uniform of Company A of the "Junaluska Zouaves"

The "Junaluska Zouaves" were a 'name only' zouave company; having never officially adopted any form (traditional or American) of the Zouave attire.

The company instead wore the standard issue uniform that was drawn for the entire Legion throughout the war. Within the company officers' files can be found requisitions for various items of equipment during the company's term of existence. This includes requisitions for 90 pairs of drawers, one coat and one pair of pants by, then, Captain William H. Thomas made in May 1862 at Knoxville, Tennessee, and another by Captain Matthew H. Love for sixty (60) pairs of shoes on October 16th, 1864, which requisition was filled in full that same day.
