History of Company B of the "Junaluska Zouaves"
Company B of the "Junaluska Zouaves" was organized from the sixty (60) surplus members of the original company (Company A), and were officially mustered into Confederate States service as Company B of the North Carolina Cherokee Battalion on April 9th, 1862, at Qualla Town, North Carolina, for three years' service, under the command of Captain Gideon M. Hanks, late of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment. The original members were all drawn from the area around Qualla Town, and were joined on July 21st by an additional thirty-five (35) from the area, and on September 1st another eighteen (18) from the area around Cheoih.
Shortly after completing their organization the battalion was moved to the area around Knoxville, Tennessee, where additional recruiting and organization was completed and on September 27th, 1862, the command was reorganized as Thomas' Legion of North Carolina Volunteers, and the company was re-designated as Company D of the Infantry Regiment. However, with more volunteers coming forward another re-organization was affected in January 1863, and the company was re-designated as Company B of the Infantry Regiment, Thomas' Legion, remaining as such until January 1865 when it, along with Companies A, C & D, were assigned to the Indian Battalion of the Infantry Regiment.
The company would serve with the Legion throughout its campaigns and marches, and would see the end of their service on May 10th, 1865, at Waynesville, North Carolina, where the Legion was formally surrendered and disbanded.
Uniform of Company B of the "Junaluska Zouaves"
 |
The "Junaluska Zouaves" were a 'name only' zouave company; having never officially adopted any form (traditional or American) of the Zouave attire.
The company instead wore the standard issue uniform that was drawn for the entire Legion throughout the war. Within the company officers' files can be found requisitions for various items of equipment during the company's term of existence. This includes a requisition made by 1st Lieutenant James Taylor on November 15th, 1863, at Asheville, North Carolina, for sixty (60) .57 North Carolina Rifles with wipers, sixty (60) cartridge boxes and cartridge box belts, sixty (60) wait belts, sixty (60) gun-slings, sixty (60) cap pouches, one thousand (1,000) .58 cal. cartridges with caps, one thousand (1,000) .69 cal. cartridges with caps, one thousand (1,000) extra musket caps, twenty (20) .54 cal. cartridges, one (1) keg of rifle powder and four (4) packing gun boxes.
