  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Springfield Zouave Grays" were organized in 1858 by John Cook with volunteers from the town of Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. Upon completing its organization John Cook was elected as Captain of Company, which was assigned to service with the Illinois State Militia as Company A of the 20th Regiment of Infantry.

With the calling up of volunteers in 1861 by President Abraham Lincoln the company immediately volunteered for active service was recruited to full strength, going in one day from only thirty (30) members to that evening having one hundred and eight (108) men on the rolls. The company reported for duty at the country fair grounds west of Springfield, designated as Camp Yates, on April 17th, 1861, and went into camp at that place, quickly being joined by other volunteer companies. On April 25th, 1861, the company was mustered into United States service as Company I of the 7th Illinois Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, for three months service, the original company commander, Captain John Cook, was elected as the Colonel of the new regiment with Andrew J. Babcock assuming the position of Captain of the "Springfield Zouave Grays." The company would serve with the regiment throughout its first three months, and upon the expiration of that term of service on July 25th, 1861, the men re-enlisted for three years service, and then go on with the regiment throughout the rest of the war. The company was mustered out of service on July 9th, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky.

  UNIFORM

The photos of Marshall M McIntire & Edward S. Johnson in the uniform of the Springfield Zouave Grays give an example of the uniform of the company ca. 1861. It consisted of a dark blue Zouave jacket with red (sometimes described as white) trim around the edges and inverted chevrons along the cuffs, a light blue vest/shirt with piping, red trousers, leather gatiers and topped off with a red kepi. The Zouave uniform lasted only a short time, and was replaced with the regulation attire upon the regiment drawing its first issue in 1861.
