| August 23rd to October 26th, 1861: The companies that will compose the battalion are individually mustered into Confederate service. |
| August 23rd, 1861: The Abbeville Troop (Company A) is mustered into Confederate service at Lightwood Knot Springs near Columbia, South Carolina, under the command of Captain Moses T. Owen. |
| August 25th, 1861: The Ferguson Rangers (Company B) is mustered into Confederate service at Lightwood Knot Springs near Columbia, South Carolina, under the command of Captain Niles Nesbitt. |
| September 18th, 1861: The Edgefield Rangers (Company C) are mustered into Confederate service at Camp Johnson at Lightwood Knot Springs near Columbia, South Carolina, under the command of Captain John D. Twiggs. |
| October 2nd, 1861: The Chester Troop (Company D) is mustered into Confederate service at Camp Johnson at Lightwood Knot Springs near Columbia, South Carolina, under the command of Captain William A. Walker. |
| October 26th, 1861: The Fort Motte Rangers (Company E) are mustered into Confederate service at Fort Motte, South Carolina, under the command of Captain James D. Trezevant. |
| September 22nd, 1861: Company A moves from Camp Johnson to Sullivan's Island near Charleston, South Carolina. |
| October 17th, 1861: One platoon of Company B moves from Camp Johnson to Edisto Island, being followed by the second platoon on November 1st. |
| October 30th, 1861: Company E leaves from Fort Motte and arrives in Charleston, South Carolina. |
| October 31st, 1861: The Battalion is organized per Special Orders No. 198, Adjutant & Inspector Generals Office, Columbia, South Carolina, with five companies (A to E) under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Logan Black (Of Fairfield District); all of which had enlisted for the duration of the war prior to the organization of the battalion (August 23rd to October 26th). |

| November 2nd, 1861: Company D arrives at Mars Bluff (Marion District), South Carolina. |
| November 4th, 1861: Company D moves to Florence, South Carolina |
| November 6th, 1861: Company E moves from Charleston to Coosawhatchie. |
| November 7th, 1861: Company D arrives at Camp Marion, South Carolina. |
| November 14th, 1861: Company C leaves from Charleston and moves to Adams Run, and is there joined by Company A. |
| November 19th, 1861: Company D moves to Cat Island near Georgetown; Company E moves from Coosawhatchie to Bee's Creek. |
| November 24th, 1861: Company B moves from Edisto Island to Adams Run. |
| November 26th, 1861: Company D moves from South Island for Adams Run. |
| November 29th, 1861: Company D arrives at Adams Run. |
| December 3rd, 1861: Company D moves from Cat Island to nearby South Island near Georgetown. |
| December 4th, 1861: The Allen Hussars are mustered into Confederate service at Pickens Courthouse, South Carolina, as Company F of the 1st Cavalry Battalion, under the command of Captain Elam Sharpe. |
| ____ ___, 1862: The L.J. Johnson Cavalry is mustered into Confederate service as Company G of the 1st Cavalry Battalion, under the command of Captain L.J. Johnson. |
| ____ ___, 1862: The Robin Jones Cavalry is mustered into Confederate service as Company H of the 1st Cavalry Battalion, under the command of Captain Robin A.C. Jones. |
| ____ ___, 1862: The Round O' Troop is mustered into Confederate service as Company I of the 1st Cavalry Battalion, under the command of Captain John R.P. Fox. |
| January 2nd, 1862: Companies A, D, & F move from Adams Run to Camp Ripley, South Carolina. |
| January 10th, 1862: Company A moves from Camp Ripley to Church Flats. |
| January 13th, 1862: Company A moves from Church Flats to Wadmalaw Island. |
| February 10th, 1862: Engaged at Barnwell Island, South Carolina. |
| April 19th, 1862: The battalion is engaged in a skirmish at John's Island, South Carolina |
| May 26th, 1862: Captain John David Twiggs (of Hamburg) of Company C is promoted to Major of the Battalion, with Thomas W. Whatley replacing Twiggs as the Captain of the Company. |
| May 29th, 1862: Two companies of the battalion are engaged at Pocotaligo, South Carolina, with two others being held in reserve during the fight. |
| June 7th, 1862: The pickets of the battalion are engaged in a skirmish on John's Island near Charleston, South Carolina. |
| June 25th, 1862: With the creation of Company K by using new recruits and men from Companies C, D, & F, the regiment reaches the strength of ten companies, and is redesignated as the First (1st) Cavalry Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. |
