REGIMENTAL TIMELINE
August 22nd, 1862: The regiment is organized by the consolidation of the Fourth (4th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, the Cavalry Battalion of Hampton's Legion, the Bonham Light Dragoons, and Boykins Mounted Rangers, and designated as the Second (2nd) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, per Special Order No. 196, Adjutant & Inspector General's Office, Richmond, Virginia.
September 9th, 1862: The regimental organization is completed at Urbana, Maryland, under the command of Colonel Matthew Calbraith Butler of Edgefield, South Carolina.
September 1862: Served in the Maryland Campaign.
September 17th, 1862: Engaged at Sharpsburg, Maryland.
October 9th to 12th, 1862: Served in Stuart's Expedition into Maryland & Pennsylvania.
November to December 1862: Served in the Fredericksburg Campaign.
November 28th, 1862: Engaged at Hartwood Church, Virginia.
December 12th, 1862: Engaged at Dumfries, Virginia.
December 13th, 1862: Engaged at Fredericksburg, Virginia.
December 19th, 1862: Engaged at Occoquan River, Virginia.
December 27th to 29th, 1862: Served in the raid on Dumfries & Fairfax Station, Virginia.
June to July 1863: Served in the Pennsylvania Campaign.
June 9th, 1863: Engaged at Brandy Station, Virginia.
June 21st, 1863: Engaged at Upperville, Virginia.
October 9th to 22nd, 1863: Served in the Bristoe Campaign (Virginia).
November to December 1863: Served in the Mine Run Campaign (Virginia).
February 15th, 1864: The regiment, along with the 1st Cavalry Regiment, is ordered to return to South Carolina, to recruit new men and to remount the regiment with new horses.
March 23rd to 26th, 1864: The regiment leaves from Hanover Courthouse, Virginia, by rail for South Carolina; the horses of the regiment are taken overland rather than by rail.
March 29th, 1864: The regiment begins arriving at Columbia, South Carolina, by detachments.
March to December 1864: Served on duty along the Coast of South Carolina.
January to May 1865: Served in the Carolina's Campaign (South & North Carolina).
January 3rd to 15th, 1865: Engaged in the defense of Fort Fisher, North Carolina.
March 19th to 21st, 1865: Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina.
April 26th, 1865: The regiment is surrendered as part of the Army of Tennessee at Durham Station, North Carolina, but was not present with the Army at the time.
May __, 1865: The regiment is disbanded near Chester, South Carolina.
