The following historical information is about the service of both the battalion, and the men, of the Fourteenth (14th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, which served in the American Civil War from December 18th, 1861 to January 18th, 1863.   BATTALION TIMELINE

 
December 18th, 1861: The battalion is organized with four (4) companies as the First (1st) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion.

January 1862: The Battalion is officially mustered into Confederate service at Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina, as the Second (2nd) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, for two years' service. At the time the men elected Paul S. Felder of Orangeburg District as Lieutenant Colonel and Joseph H. Morgan as Major.

January 1862 to January 1863: Served on duty in the defense of Coastal South Carolina.

May 29th, 1862: The battalion is engaged at Pocotaligo, South Carolina.

August 21st, 1862: A detachment of the battalion is engaged at Pinckney Island, South Carolina.

October 22nd & 23rd, 1862: The battalion is engaged at Coosawhatchie, South Carolina losing 2 killed, 13 wounded and 13 missing in action.

May 13th, 1862: The battalion is reorganized at McPhersonville, South Carolina, for the duration of the war, and is officially re-designated as the Fourteenth (14th) Cavalry Battalion, South Carolina Volunteers.

January 18th, 1863: The battalion is consolidated with the Seventeenth (17th) Cavalry Battalion and Captain's Whilden's (Company B, St. James Mounted Riflemen) & Harlan's Companies (Mountain Rangers), to form the Fifth (5th) Cavalry Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers.

        Company A (Santee Guerillas) is designated as Company H of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
        Company B (St. Matthews Troop) is designated as Company A of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
        Company C (Lexington Light Dragoons) is designated as Company F of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
        Company D is designated as Company I of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
