The following historical information is about the service of both the battalion, and the men, of the Seventeenth (17th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, which served in the American Civil War from April 12th, 1862, to January 18th, 1863.   BATTALION TIMELINE

 
April 12th, 1862: The battalion is organized with four (4) companies as the Sixth (6th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, sometimes referred to as Jeffords Squadron, or Jeffords Battalion, under the command of Major Robert J. Jeffords of Charleston District.

        February 17th, 1862: The South Carolina Rangers are mustered into service as Company A at Chehaw near Pocotaligo, South Carolina.
        February 20th, 1862: The Willington Rangers are mustered into service as Company B at Charleston, South Carolina.
        March 20th, 1862: The Dixie Rangers are mustered into service as Company C at Camp Gist near Charleston, South Carolina.
        April 2nd, 1862: The Beech Hill Rangers are mustered into service as Company D at Chehaw near Pocotaligo, South Carolina.

May 13th, 1862: The battalion is reorganized as the Seventeenth (17th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion

April 1862 to January 1863: Served on duty along Coastal South Carolina.

June 1862: Engaged at Hutchinsons Island, South Carolina.

July 9th, 1862: Engaged in the Expedition to Fenwick's Island, South Carolina.

December 26th, 1862: A detachment of Company A makes a reconnaissance of Hutchinsons Island, South Carolina.

January 18th, 1863: The battalion is consolidated with the Fourteenth (14th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion and Captain Whilden's (Company B, St. James Mounted Riflemen) and Harlan's (Mountain Rangers) companies to form the Fifth (5th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The companies of the Battalion were designated in the new regiment as:

        Company A (South Carolina Rangers) is designated as Company D of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
        Company B (Willington Rangers) is designated as Company G of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
        Company C (Dixie Rangers) is designated as Company B of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
        Company D (Beech Hill Rangers) is designated as Company C of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.
