Post War Zouaves, 1865 to Present

Following the American Civil War (1861 to 1865) the Regiments of Zouaves diminished quickly in numbers, with most of the pre war Zouave companies and organizations of the National Guards or State Militia's disappearing from the scene. Of the few units that managed to re-organized together as regiments were three of the old New York Zouaves regiments, being the "Hawkins Zouaves" (now the 1st Regiment of Infantry), the "Duryea's Zouaves" (now 4th Regiment of Infantry), and the "National Zouaves" (3rd Regiment of Infantry), all of the New York National Guard, however even these were short lived, with Duryea's being disbanded in 1869, the National Zouaves in 1868, and the final being the Hawkins Zouaves which were officially disbanded in August 1875. With the disbanding of the "Hawkins Zouaves" (1st Battalion of Infantry) from the New York National Guard in 1875, the American Zouave Regiments faded into history; however the Zouave was still present in the American Military in the form of the individual companies which were represented in almost every state of the Union both before, during, and after the American Civil War. The uniforms varied in every way shape and form, with almost no two being alike, each being unique and distinctive to their own way of doing things, the uniform itself would persist up until the First World War when it was finally put away by the American Zouaves and replaced by the khaki regulation United States Army uniform's being adopted across the board; but the units still persisted in at least maintaining the name and reputation of being Zouaves.

The following is a listing of the known Zouave commands that existed in the United States from June of 1865 up until the present time; on the listings you will see some shown as National Guard and others in the same state as State Militia, following the war several of the old State Militia's changed over to the designation National Guard, this did not happen at one time across the county, but gradually over the years, so whereas a South Carolina company might be shown as Militia in the 1870's a California company at the same time may be shown as National Guard or even State Guard.
