History of the "Cincinnati Zouave Guard"
The "Cincinnati Zouave Guard," sometimes referred to as the 'Zouave Guards,' trace their origins back to the visit of Elmer E. Ellsworth and his 'United States Zouave Cadets' to Cincinnati, Ohio, in July 1860. Within a few days of their departure the local papers reported that "...of the visit of the Zouaves in Cincinnati. It shows in what estimation this style of military men are held by the people, and we commend it to those of our citizens who are disposed to organize a company here on the same principles..." By March 1861 recruiting and organization had been so successful that the command was shown as organized with two companies (A and B), and under the command of Major Henry Gassaway Kennett (later Colonel of the 79th Ohio Infantry Regiment), and were taking part in the regular duties of the Ohio Militia, as well as putting on exhibition drills and demonstrations for the public benefit.
With the calling up of volunteers in April 1861 both companies volunteered for active service, Company A (under James Baldwin) joining the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and Company B (under Alonzo Horton) the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
Enrolling on April 17th, 1861, for three months service, Captain James G. Baldwin led Company A to the camp at Columbus, Ohio, however, with the urgent calls for reinforcements to Washington, they were dispatched to that city on the 19th. En-route they were detoured first to Harrisburg, and then to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where on April 29th, 1861, they were officially mustered into United States service as Company D of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Serving with the regiment throughout its marches and campaigns over the next three months, including the Battle of First Manassas, the company returned to Ohio in August to prepare to conclude its service. On August 9th, 1861, the company was officially mustered out of United States service at Cincinnati, Ohio, by Captain Patrick Henry Breslin of the 18th U.S. Infantry Regiment.
Following its mustering out of United States service, several of the members of the two companies joined other commands to continue active service during the war, while others undertook efforts to reorganize the command. By September 1861 the company was volunteering its service to take charge of an artillery battery then being constructed for the defense of Cincinnati. Their history after January 1862 is not well established at this time (April 2020), however, it is known that in May 1864 members of both Company A and B were mustered into United States service as Company E of the 137th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment for one-hundred days service, under Captain James G. Baldwin, with all of the company officers, and a portion of the non-commissioned officers, being former veterans of the Zouaves.
