History of the "Springfield Zouave Cadets"

The 'Springfield Zouave Cadets' were organized on September 10th, 1860, at a meeting at the old Light Guard Armory in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. Among their early officers was Edwin C. Mason, who was elected as Captain, and led the company through the routine of pre-war militia duties such as parades, drill, exhibitions, etc. With the secession of the Southern States, and firing on Fort Sumter, in April 1861 a meeting of the company was held a vote taken and the men elected to volunteer for active service.

Opening recruiting offices on April 17th, 1861, the company soon enrolled more than its quota, a local paper noting that “…they have four applicants to every one that can be received…” The following day the company had enrolled the necessary number and traveled to the regimental rendezvous at Columbus, where they joined the other Ohio Volunteer who would compose the 1st and 2nd Infantry Regiments. They were not to remain long in camp however, as due to the urgent calls for reinforcements at Washington, D.C., they were quickly dispatched to that city on April 19th. Being detoured however, they were first sent to Harrisburg, and then to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where on April 29th, 1861, they were officially mustered into United States service as Company F of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Serving with the regiment throughout its marches and campaigns over the next three months, including the Battle of First Manassas, the company returned to Ohio in July to prepare to conclude its service. On July 31st, 1861, the company was officially mustered out of United States service with the rest of the regiment at Columbus, Ohio, by Captain Howard Stansbury of the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers.

Following their discharge from the service the members of the Springfield Zouaves went in various directions, two groups of members would join Company D of the 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, while the other enlisted with the 17th Independent Battery of Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery. Of the one-hundred (100) members of the company, sixty-five (65) are known to have returned to service, of which thirty-seven (37) would become officers during the course of the war – three (3) Colonel's, three (3) Lieutenant Colonel's, three (3) Majors, eight (8) Captains, fifteen (15) First Lieutenant's and five (5) Second Lieutenants.
