Enlisted as a Private in Captain Stapp’s Independent Company of Illinois Mounted Volunteers on August 17th, 1847, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri; promoted to Sergeant on August 23rd, 1847; elected as Second Lieutenant of the company on June 13th, 1848; mustered out of service with the company on July 26th, 1848, at Alton, Illinois. Appointed as First Lieutenant of Company G of the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on August 12th, 1861; resigned his commission on December 27th, 1861. Appointed as Major of the 12th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on March 8th, 1862; resigned his commission to accept another on November 17th, 1862. Mustered into service as Lieutenant Colonel of the 118th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 20th, 1862, for three years service; promoted to Colonel on November 29th, 1862; brevetted to the rank of Brigadier General of United States Volunteers on June 28th, 1865, for meritorious services in the war; mustered out of service with the regiment on October 1st, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. [Born March 8th, 1822, in New York; died on December 10th, 1910; buried at the McConnell Geddes Cemetery in Fountain Green, Hancock County, Illinois.]

Enlisted as Captain of Company G in August of 1862; mustered into service as Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment on January 13th, 1863, with rank from November 29th, 1862, vice Lieutenant Colonel Fonda was promoted; mustered out of service with the regiment on October 1st, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

    McClaughry, Robert Wilson: Of Carthage, Illinois. Enlisted on August 15th, 1862, for three years service; mustered into service as Captain of Company B of the 118th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 7th, 1862; promoted to Major on December 15th, 1862, with rank from November 8th, 1862; resigned his commission to accept another and was honorably discharged on May 13th, 1864. Appointed as a Major & Additional Paymaster of United States Volunteers on April 20th, 1864; honorably mustered out of volunteer service on October 12th, 1865. [Born on July 22nd, 1839, in Fountain Green, Illinois, the son of Matthew (1803-1879) and Mary Hume McClaughry (1812-1852); married Miss Elizabeth Catherine Madden (1841-1914), no date; died on November 9th, 1920, at Chicago, Illinois; buried at the Monmouth Cemetery in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois.]

Appointed as a Captain & Assistant Adjutant General of United States Volunteers on November 25th, 1863; accepted the appointment on March 23rd, 1864; promoted to Major & Assistant Adjutant of Volunteers on July 15th, 1864; brevetted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel of Volunteers on March 13th, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services during the War; honorably mustered out of volunteer service on January 4th, 1866. [Born on May 9th, 1837, in New York; died on February 11th, 1898; buried at the Memphis Cemetery in Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.]

    Sleater, Huddlestone Marchant: Of Carthage, Illinois. Enlisted on August 15th, 1862, for three years service; mustered into service as a Private in Company B on November 7th, 1862, at Camp Butler, Illinois; promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major in November of 1862; promoted to Second Lieutenant of Company D on February 19th, 1863; promoted to First Lieutenant on January 2nd, 1864, with rank from November 12th, 1863; appointed as Regimental Adjutant on July 6th, 1864, with rank from March 22nd, 1864; mustered out of service with the regiment on October 1st, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
